Replace with new back boiler or new combi boiler?

We have just purchased a 1930s semi and it has a Baxi Bermuda back boiler. Unfortunately the boiler does not seem to be working as it has a leak. We have asked for some quotes to service and repair the boiler but the companies have recommended new combi boilers. I was surprised that they did not recommend a replacement Baxi back boiler as from their website they give the impression that they are energy efficient and are less hassle to replace than having a new combi boiler.

I really have no idea what is the best option so would appreciate any advice.

One company has recommended an Ideal combi boiler, another Worcester Junior and the last a Vokera compact - any thoughts on these?

Thanks in advance for your advice

  • The original Baxi Bermuda back boiler gave up in our last house last year and was written off due to leakage. Just what we didn't need prior to putting the house on the market!

We were advised to have a new condensing boiler fitted and so we had a Worcester Bosch which fitted nicely inside an existing kitchen cupboard.

I don't know how efficient a new BB back boiler would have been but the new condensing boiler reduced our gas bills over the next couple of months MASSIVELY. It was just a shame that we didn't get more use from it due to our move.

Our new house has a combi. With no HW storage tank having showers can be very interesting when someone flushes the loo or runs a tap!

baxi as far as i am aware are the only co still making a back boiler however there are a number of things to consider, it is only 15kw output, you can only use an electric fire front, you need somewhere to run the condense pipe, your old boiler is prob gravity h/w & pumped heating & if so this will need to be changed to fully pumped, so to be honest the installation costs are going to be quite high.

if you want to go the combi route i def wouldn't fit an Ideal or a Vokera, WB are too dear & are a pain to service & repair my recommendation is below if you go for the new exclusive it comes with a 5 yr warrentee as standard.

I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

So the first question to ask is 'will the mains water supply support a combi'

I hope the companies that suggested the combi boilers would have checked this.

I think we will go for the combi boiler option but I will investigate better boiler options

Your optimism is heartening...perhaps you could ask them then you will know for certain.

We had an old Baxi back boiler replaced with a combi a couple of years ago - only wish we had it done sooner. The gas bill dropped by about a third plus the house warms up in a fraction of the time that it used to take.

Frequent anguished posts on here would indicate that all too often they don't.
