I thought anyone in a shared house might be interested in this:

http://www.templock.co.uk/

It fits to most modern internal doors (I've just fitted one) and it stops people entering your room whether you're in it or not.

I'm not in a shared house, but I've fitted it to my bedroom door and will use it when I am asleep as I don't live in a great area.

Btw, it was recommended on the Housebuying and Renting forum a couple of days ago:

and I have no connection to it except that I just bought one, but I know I would have appreciated one when I was a student.

It looks good for securing the door when you are out, but I'm confused how it would work when you are asleep? If it is fitted on the inside of the door, can't the handle still be used from outside?

And my other worry would be fire safety - would you be able to get out quickly in an emergency?

I thought the same, but it is fitted on the outside of door, so not a problem.

    From Templock site:

If you wish to prevent entry while you are in your room simply close the door of the TempLock and lock it while your door is open. Then re-enter your room and close the door. You will be able to open your door at will from the inside but access from the outside will be prevented.

No, you always fit it to the outside of the door and then if you want to remain in the room, you just set it and close the door. There are no fire safety issues as the handle on the inside can always be used as normal.

The only slight concern I have is that if someone was, say, unconscious in the room, then no-one would be able to get in to help them, but personally, I think the peace of mind that an intruder couldn't enter my bedroom when I was asleep is much more important than that.

To be honest, Templock or not, if someone really wanted/needed to get into a room, a firm kick around the handle area would normally do the job.

Yes, I'm sure someone could still kick the door in if they were determined but not around the handle area as the device doesn't give access to it.
