Icing own cake?

Obviously it depends how much experience you have, but making a cake is pretty simple and I do bits of basic baking at home.
Just wondering if anyone has managed to make their own weddig cake, ice it etc? After going to a few wedding fayres etc I have realised the ideal cake for me is pretty simple, yet the cheapest quote is £180. Can it be done yourself? Anyone got pics to share?
Thanks

I do a Christmas cake every year but I would never attempt this as a wedding cake. I just can't get the icing perfectly smooth enough I don't think. Have you made anything like this before? If you're a keen amateur baker then I'm sure it would be possible but I think it's beyond my skills and I bake all the time. I suppose it depends on how smooth and professional you want it to look. If you're happy for it to look slightly rustic and home made then you should be ok. If you want it to look perfect....well...if it was that easy, then there wouldn't be a huge business in charging for it!
For a cheaper professional alternative have you considered M&S wedding cakes? I understand they are cheaper but still very good.0 -
I made our wedding cake, me and hubby both iced it and sister in law made our figurines.
Here is a pic!
Obviously its not perfect, but because the cake was meant to be a table it didn't have to be straight sharp edges.
It was easier to do than you may think (Not the people!!!):T0 -

I managed to make ours. it was 4 tiers and cost about £50 to make and I thought it turned out very well. This was my first wedding cake.
This was ours:
There's a few things I learnt along the way in regards to the 2 sponge layers in the center but other than that it was so simple to make.
Even the roses were easy to makeWhy not do a trial run before the big day?

I'm planning to get the iced fruit cakes from a superstore and decorating them. There's plenty of videos on YouTube on how to make gumpaste/sugarpaste flowers, and I've been practicing with blue-tac at work! Thinking about getting a plain iced sponge from a baker if it's not too much. OH isn't sure about the idea but he's waiting to see what my practice run looks like
nene - your cake looks wonderful! (can't see the other pics posted)0 -
You can get lovely reasonable priced plain iced cakes from Waitrose - we had ours from there, we had a fruit one, a vanilla sponge and a chocoate sponge. M&S ready iced cakes are also popular and I think Tesco and Asda also do them.
For ours I added ribbon, some icing anmals I bought off Ebay and silk flower toppers.0 -
Wow your cakes are fab! neneromanova I really like the criss cross effect and your flowers look so professional! How did you make them?! I am even considering buying a 'dummy cake' or polystrene to decorate myself and then just a slab to cut and eat!0
