Best budget emulsion

What's the view on a decent cheap white or magnolia for general use?
I only ask as I have always used wickes, both trade and premium grades.

I have nothing bad to say about it, the stuff has been brilliant.
It has however gotten expensive recently compared to others.

So today, in need of a tub of magnolia matt emulsion I scanned the sheds to see what was on offer.
B&Q have 2 x 10ltr tubs on offer for £25 for 2
Best deal locally, even better as we get a discount at their place.

Crown magnolia matt emulsion, no mention of trade or anything else on the tubs. But I do suspect this is a relabeled or watered down product for B&Q release only.

It is the worst paint I have ever bought.:mad:
It is transparent at best, even to cover white filler on magnolia background needs 2 coats.
When it comes to painting to a glossed edge, this stuff sheds off the gloss like paint does from silicone:mad:

Anyone want approx 19 ltrs of shiete paint??

So, what works and is value at present?

And yes, I know you get what you pay for, and to be honest had this been for anything other than the conservatory I would have paid more, but the crown label clinched it hence my suspicions. :A
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

I can't answer the question as I won't buy it. That's because the "budget" stuff is non cost effective. Don't only does it misbehave as you have highlighted but the additional time spent faffing about with it costs more dosh than you've saved on the paint compared with using a better quality paint in the first instance. Have you tried Albany from Brewers? Thats reasonably priced if you are squeezed on costs at around £ 15-£16 per 2½l compared with £ 20 for Dulux from B&Q.

The cheap Crown stuff that B&Q are peddling at present is carp - no better than their own brand "thin as ....." stuff. A more expensive thicker paint can be thinned to your requirements to make it go further too.

Oh and sorry but Brewers branches tend to close at 1pm on a Saturday. No help at all am I? :D:D

    Cheers

I wouldn't recommend ANY cheap White paint (I'd guess magnolia is just as carp but I wouldn't buy anything magnolia coloured if my life depended on it!) it's all stupidly thin.

I've tried a couple just to save a few quid and never should have bothered. My bedroom took 5 coats to change from Cornflower White (a pale grey, off White) to non-showeverypaintstrokedripdownthewallwhitewater white:rotfl:

    made by ici.

Used tons of the stuff and its very good
  • When we first moved into our house (as tenants) we painted the whole house magnolia (it was cheap, and the easiest option). We bought Wickes Trade (15ltr Magnolia for the walls and 10ltr White for the ceilings) and those worked brilliantly, most the walls were a dark coffee colour before painting, and from memory only needed one coat. Made such a difference to the light! Prices have shot up since, but I would probably still opt for it now if we were in the same position again.

Other than that, I'd probably try Screwfix they have Leyland Contract Matt Magnolia 10ltr for £15.49 at the moment. I've used their gloss paint in the past and its been pretty good too.
  • Macpherson Trade is a decent compromise on price vs quality
  • i found the b&q value white paint is better than the crown 10l tubs

altho i have only used crown in matt and i used the b&q value in silk
  • My personal favourite budget paint is Wickes trade branded matt paint.

I've used some cheapy Crown white and although it looks like water and is practically see through when your apply it, it does seem to dry well. I managed to cover a 'blue' plasterboard in two coats with it just last weekend.
