they still went ahead with proceedings, if she is not liable.

It appears you getting confused regarding liability - you were the person who was liable (and your name was on the bill as the person who should be paying), your daughter was taken in to account when calculating the bill (as she should be ) - this doesn't make her liable.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

CIS Hi, i am being charged for my daughter. I understand i am the bill payer,. The issue is not with me, its with my daughter who is a student. Maybe i am using the wrong terminology, basically they are charging me extra for her, as she is supposedly no longer a student, which she is. To this effect, i have tried to show she is still in education by every means i have available to me and what i have been asked to supply. I do not understand a system whereby no names, phone numbers, etc are given, its basically set up so no responsibility is taken. Ive asked that they log on their system what i have been asked to supply, but no can do, I have asked to have a record of what they have recorded etc, as on numerous occasions its not acknowledged, but thats my word against theirs, exactly, i say, so can i please have a record of this visit - NO - we dont work like that, but i can assure you i have logged it all (same thing said all the time). Can i please see a supervisor, no, because she will just tell you what i have, at lunch, not available etc. OK, thanks, and back i trot with the next bit of info required

ETA - thanks for you input
  • i have an irate teenager on the phone asking why i haven't left, i am in such a strange headspace, i cant seem to move, so putting computer off now and going.

After you have put in your complaint to the council if it is not resolved fully then you can escalate your complaint to the Local Government Ombudsman - Good Luck

I would contact your MP too.

Rather than an MP (or as well), contact one of the councillors who represent you on the Council.
  • Benefitbaby - never heard of that but will look them up. I am just in the process of sending a letter off to the council, and am going to say if this is not resolved, i will up the complaint to my MP and i will have their reasons for upholding the costs.
Voyager - my mp is lynne featherstone and shes very good, but yes i always forget about councellors - i will see when they meet and contact one or both. Thank you
