Gas and electricity supplier for a newbie

Hi everyone.

My fiance and I are moving into a new build in 6weeks time :j and I have started looking at energy tariffs.

My problem is that the other half still lives with his parents and my energy is included in my rent, therefore we have no idea what our usage will be!

Does anyone have a suggestion as to which companies we should look at? Should we go for separate companies for gas and electric or look at duel fuel? I can't use a comparison website because we have no old bills to use.

Thanks in advance for you help

You can use a comparison site.

Most offer an opportunity to allow them to estimate your usage based on house size, number of occupants etc., or you could use the typical medium household figures of 16500kWh gas and 3300kWh electricity p.a.

Use a comp site with any supplier and tariff as a starting point, eg BG Standard tariff.
You will however be in a deemed contract with the existing suppliers (even in a new build), so you can't switch until you have registered with them first. Take opening readings the day you occupy the property, and register for an account.

First find out from the developer who your deemed supplier is as you will be on their standard tariff when you move in. Take a note of your opening readings when you move in and let your deemed supplier know. Then use a comparison website and you will have to estimate your usage figures until you have some actual readings. Some of the comparison sites have guides for size of house, etc. The UK average is 16500 for gas and 3300 for electricity.
