I would have thought that removed meters, unless there is a complaint would be disposed of promptly.

Yes, they go back to the manufacturers and end up back on the market. That's why you see new meters fitted with readings other than zeroes or the less common all nines.

If its recent, they may not have gone further than the metering agent so a supplier can track them down. If they get removed by distributors on emergency call outs, they can be very difficult to find.

I think Swanjon said the gas meters are destroyed though.

    Here's how it works:

Engineer removes meter, leaves it on his van until he has time to go to a depot to drop off they then send it off to a central storage centre, meters are then scrapped or sent back to the meter owner if newish.

If working in a local DNOs area who are also a mop their removed meters are usually dropped off direct to them. I know SPOW and HYDE have places they openly let any other meter operator just drop off their old meters.

Chances of anyone being bothered to look for one meter are slim.

Correct any sort of meter that is removed in a emergency is kept for a long time usually.

We keep meters that may have any sort of fire issue - directly or indirectly for 10 years.

You guys are obviously very diligent. I remember years ago I was trying to track down meters removed by emergency guys in fires and the distributor said they went in a skip in one of the bays to go back and I rarely ever got anywhere with them. Good job the meters weren't the source or the fire investigators may have been a bit unhappy at the lack of process!
