XP is OK, but out of support now.
That is not what the Microsoft website says. It talks of 8/4/2014.0 -
I would start with a clean install of XP.
If a "major brand" it is likely that some sort of restore image is available that would take it back to as new, then do all the updates.
Also I would fit more memory assuming that is possible (up to 3 or 4 GB assuming it is 32 bit XP).0
