How to get my dog "fix"

Be careful if you go down the dog walking/sitting route. You could write any contract you like to exclude yourself of any liability but a contract cannot just nulify existing laws, and if the dog were to damage your property (no external people to get involved, but will the owner pay out?), damage someone else's property, or even attack someone in your care, you may be on very rocky ground. The law deems the "keeper" as the one responsible, rather than specifying the owner, and there has been legal precedent of a dog having more than one keeper. If you were a regular walker, or you were "temporary keeper" over the weekend, you may find yourself liable for someone else's dog regardless of whether you were walking/sitting for free or for money, and this is why the correct insurance would be very important.
Perhaps approach some other doggy rescues. Try joining up to dog forums - Dogsey, Dogpages, Dog Rescue World are a few I'm on. You may find local rescues you never knew existed, or rescues elsewhere in the country that need help nationwide. Dog walking, transporting dogs to kennels/fosterers/new homes, maybe even a bit of fostering yourself if it'd suit - maybe not on a day to day basis but if you were off work at Christmas it could be a good time to get a kenneled dog into a home for a bit of respite (I fostered a doggy over Christmas one year and it was fab for getting weight back onto her, letting a leg sore heal, etc. as she was so stressed in kennels she was jumping up at the walls all the time, so burning off loads of nervous energy and rubbing her leg sorer and sorer. Plus I could assess her in a home environment which helped find her a suitable home)

Date someone who has a dog?
Ha!! Perhaps if I had a bloke I wouldn't want a dog so badly!
I have done the card in the vets but to be honest the receptionist just looked at my like I was a bit nuts.
I will try and have a look for smaller rescues a bit closer to home.
Perhaps I should have really posted about how I really want to change my lifestye leave the city and live in the middle of nowhere with a few mutts............... I wish!0 -
Now my Lolly has just come in soaking and covered in mud, where are you again!!

Have a talk to your local rescue homes (not just the big ones), they're normally glad of a hand.
The Hearing Dogs charity by us often wants walkers for dogs that live with people who aren't very mobile.Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?0 -
I do dog walking for a local animal charity. I love it. I do it when I can and usually ad hoc at weekends. I don;t live in a flat but as a single person working quite long hours and living in a small house...it's not fair to have a dog, so this is my alternative! So, I get lots of fresh air, exercise and go for long walks when I can at the weekends with dogs from the shelter. I'm also part of the re-homing process from time to time with the dogs I walk regularly...my feedback is appreciated.Debt 30k in 2008.:o Cleared all my debt in 2013 and loving being debt free

Of those are for farmers not mere dog owners LOL0 -
IMHO taking shelter/rescue dogs for walks is great as they do not get that many nice long walks but I personally tottaly disagree with taking a dog home for the weekends and returning to a kennel/shelter on weekdays.
This must be so stresful and confusing for the poor dog - having a nice weekend with all home comforts and then being returned to a kennel.
Friend of mine volunteers for a rescue and they keep some dogs in paid kennels as there is not enough foster homes for all of them. Some people like the idea of taking such dog home for the weekend and I really and I mean REALLY feel this is so wrong - for the poor dog0 -

I totally agree my weekend dog quip was for comic effect only (well it would be ideal but only on a dog-share kind of arrangement not a "well stay here get warm and comfy, attached and loved for two days before going back to your cage" kind of way!
I still haven't managed to find anywhere local, I am in Mile End if anyone knows of anywhere!!!
And the dating sites.................... I cant believe I actually looked hehe!!0 -
I feel you're pain - I hate not having my own perma dog but its just not possible with my strange work life
My solution was dog fostering - since i started I have had two gorgeous dogs to care for for a local charity where the family had to go into safe care.
I still want my own though eventually0
