I signed up for this service( free between registered users tho' not more than 60 min in one day) as I don't have long conversations and have kids in distant places. I have finally persuaded them to sign up too and was very happy with the service until suddenly it stopped working. I have exchanged some emails with their support team and they tell me that they decide to give you a certain amount of credit in my case 38 pence and that when this is used up you can no longer make any calls free or otherwise. Since I had only called the registered numbers I ws somewhat puzzled. On looking up my call history I discovered that my last call to France was charged (19P) although it was the same number I had been calling as a free number up til then. My daughter, whose number it is, told me that she was having trouble, unable to use the service on that day, she also did not know why as she too had not used it to make paying calls. It smells to me of some sharp practice I should have known there is no such thing as a "free lunch". Does anyone else have any experience of these people. Please take care. They tell me that if I make a minimum payment of £1.25 I can continue to use the service . If I had their address I would send them a cheque for the 38 pence which they claim I owe them.

I have been looking into jahjah for one of my family, due to Virgin Media starting to bar cheap access numbers for overseas calls.

One thing that I noticed in their conditions is that free calls are only available between "active accounts". Both ends of the call must be "active accounts" for the call to be free, otherwise it will be charged at jahjah's normal rates. These appear to be fairly reasonable such as 2.5p per minute to Japan landlines the one of most interest to us.

An "active account" is one which has made a jahjah call in the last two weeks. I don't think that receiving a jahjah call counts for this purpose.

This may or may not be the cause of your problem.

I have assumed, though this is only an assumption, and if you find out the answer I would be interested to hear, that if you allow your account to become inactive, after say being away on holiday, that you could reactivate it by making a short chargeable call, then return immediately, or perhaps the next day to making free calls.

If this is the reason I don't really understand why the jahjah customer service people could not have explained it to you.
  • Thanks for your replies. I have now heard from the customer service team at Jajah, their explanations are not that clear . I had only been calling other registered accounts, anyway they have decided to reinstate me for no charge. I have now asked them to let me know how one can tell whether a previously active(free) account has now become a paying destination. I must also find out what happens with holidays. We need to know whether receiving calls keeps the account active.
  • Have just had another explanatory email from jajah so am posting it for the benefit of other users

An account becomes inactive if it is not used for an out going call, during a
    period of 14 days.

Once you make a call (paid or free) or send an SMS, your account status will be
    changed back to active.

Note that in order to make free calls your account does not have to be active,
only the destination account has to be active.

They charge for the scheduled ringback service even when there is no connection made. You also get minutes deducted from your free time even when there is no reply.

Their scheduled ringback service when a number is engaged is UNSOLICITED. There is a charge of 10p that is made via BT. For some weird reason, yesterday I got five of these automated calls for one engaged call !!!
Over 35 of such calls to me in this month alone.

JahJah do not tell people about these charges, at there website.

I had to complain to JaJah three times before getting a reply. The reply was incorrect and avoided the issue.

This practice of making automated calls, at your expense and without the permission or consent of the user is unethical, illegal and can not be condoned.

  • hello all,
    I just used jajah for the first time to call Canada from the u.k. although it was free (always good), I got cut off after approx 30 mins and told to pay into my account (NOT FREE). After a look at the site I found this;

Calls are free when you call from a personal account (not a business account), you have paid at least once, both call participants are registered as JAJAH users and the call was initiated on JAJAH Web (https://www.jajah.com). JAJAH lets you make 150 minutes of free calls per week or 500 minutes of free calls per month. JAJAH reserves the right to adjust the amount of free calls allowed per the Fair Use policy.

My problem appears to be that I have not paid "at least once"? Is this then not free, or is it a one off payment to offset charges? Any ideas would be appreciated.

    cheers!

Note that the Betamax services (e.g. http://www.nonoh.net/en/index.html or http://www.webcalldirect.com/en/) are generally cheaper and more flexible than Jajah - the only reason I still occasionally use Jajah is that I can't use my mobile phone web browser with the Betamax services but I can with Jajah.

Jajah started quite well but the good days are long gone.
I was a paying customer for 1-2 years, generally being "OK" with their services, however, the last 6 months I noticed that:
    a) Calls were registered as connected (hence I paid for them) without this actually happening.
    b) The phone was ringing on my side but not on the other.
    c) Calls were suddendly stopped and my phone was "blocked" for more than 20 minutes.
    d) The "free" call quota (which was initiated every time you actually paid money in your account) was reduced month after month until it completely disappeared ans.

I contacted them on several occasions but never received a real reply: I specified my problems but they were never addressed and instead I was sent a general "we will look into this".

Anyway, I was fed up and told them that If the problems were not solved I would like my money back and my account closed.
Then, all of a sudden, I received an e-mail from them telling me that my account was blocked (!!!) and asking me to send them proofs of name, address, if I was the account holder for my telephone line, if the card that I used to pay was mine etc.
This naturally infuriated me - as they were accepting payments without any problems before I complained, never asking any questions.
Then I e-mailed them asking for my money back, they never replied and I still waiting...
So a word of caution to everyone, I would suggest that you use somebody else instead.
