Sending heavy stuff abroad

We will soon be moving abroad and between us we only have about 100kg of personal stuff. we will be moving abroad by train so want to send our belongings in advance to our destination - I have looked into sendmybag and the prices are not bad, about £40 for up to 30kg. What other alternatives are there though that are cost effective? Sending via land post is only a maximum of 2kg with Royal mail. We have about 3 suitcases to send, maybe a few boxes too. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. The destination is Turkey by the way if that makes any difference.

You don't say where you are going, but there are some good European road services which will take 3-5 days typically and are cheap. You will need to box items up into several boxes.
We use Pharos for our European deliveries with UPS. As examples for a 28kg box 60cm cube is £18.01 to France or £22.75 to Sweden (plus VAT) although not all countries are cheap - Greece for example. Some insurance included and extra can be bought for higher value items but look out for exclusions.

Thanks Martindow, yep it's not under £100 for Turkey for only 30kg..
Ttoli, do you know who here does regular shipping to Northern Cyprus?0 -
For a delivery of that size you could try Shiply ( http://www.shiply.com/ ) - I got a good price for delivering a car from that site.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0 -
Sorry about my post I missed the fact that we are talking about Turkey.
I have not found anything cheap to more distant areas, but expat forums are probably the best place to look as has been suggested.
Sounds like a great train journey. Are you using routes from seat61.com ?0 -
Certainly will be using seat61 for help!
Well it looks like we will use sendmybag as they are the cheapest. Does anyone know if they are REALLY strict on dimensions? will 1-2cm matter? Also we have the problem of laptops, they say 'dont send laptops with us' but don't say it's not allowed. As long as it's packed ok and we check with Turkish customs about prohibited items, should it be ok?? Really annoying as something as silly as laptops might scupper our travel plans as we cannot travel europe with 2 laptops.0 -
Hey
Not sure what they'll be like in your area but I tend to use AnyVan to get stuff moved, might be worth a look?0
