Recommend a Tablet App!

Options
Hi

There have been a lot of threads seeking assistance with purchasing a tablet recently. I haven't seen much mention of good apps for when all these tablets have been bought, so I thought I'd ask for anyones recommendations on good (hopefully all free!) apps for various things!

I don't really know enough to suggest categories, but I guess the basics would be games, education, kids, help, travel... ok anything really!

I've started with a very few like Angry Birds, Temple Run, but would be interested in a painting for kids app, making music, anything entertaining.

Thanks in advance

Are we talking android based here or iOS (apple) or another OS ?

    Ill go with Android.

    For painting there Zebra Paint
    Kids finger painting art game
painting findings looks like a spot the difference type of game but more paiting orientated looks like.

    For entertainment

    try fragger,
bad piggies (managed to get either free or reduced as part of the recent play store reductions)
    jetpack joyride
theres a replica of an old pc game where you control the brick left to right so the ball hits it and hits the bricks above
    a game called bubble shoot
    elemental
Theres also a few apps for solitaire

maybe try cogs (its a puzzle game where you )

Ive tried some of those above but not all of them, some I found just by searching the play store under the various sub sections. The T3 mag did a top ten apps for android and iOS so maybe have a look at that as well.

Let us know how you get on.

    For Android:

Get the Amazon app store for their free app a day

I really like the game Plague Inc

Drippler is a good app for Android news and reviews of apps. Lots are free

If you have a nVidea Tegra based tablet like the Nexus 7 then get Tegra zone for news on games that use the chip

Certainly for Android, probably an iOS port too 'Simon Tatham Puzzles' - a really small and well written app with 20ish different types of puzzle games (sudoku, bridges, and the likes), all randomly generated and infinite, simple interface without loads of screen clutter and so suited to lower powered machines as well, completely free, ad-free, blooming excellent. I mean excellent. A few hundred kB as I recall, not half a gigabyte like the Sims Free port (which is actually very good in a fancy visuals way, if a little dull after a few days).

If you do a search for 100 best iPad apps on google there are plenty o websites and magazines that have completed these reviews. They are a good start.

Thanks all, have downloaded a few and will build from there. It is android. I forgot to ask, what browser do you recommend?

The stock browser is what powers most of the browser brands you never heard of, so depending on the version of Android, that, or Chrome. Firefox seems to work pretty well although less slick than Chrome. Opera Mobile is good, Opera Mini is excellent/very fast as it pre-renders the pages for mobile - great if you have a slow connection, not such a gain on fast connections and it has limitations

It's a cheap and cheerful android tablet I've got, the default no-name browser seems to be okay but I think I'll give chrome a go.

Just discovered last night though that the bbc iplayer doesn't seem to work properly, when I start to play anything it starts up fine, but after about 5 seconds the video freezes. Sound continues to play as normal though. I've downloaded the bbc media player app and it still happens. Any suggestions?

Try Dolphin HD browser as well. I've tried quite a few but keep coming back to Dolphin.

The IPlayer FAQ's states that it needs " Flash 10.3 enabled Android tablets running Android 2.2 or later." so check your flash player version.
