How do you know if PPI was mis-sold?

I took out a credit card in 2011, for which I also took out their PPI cover, which was based on the balance of the card.

How do I know if it was mis-sold at all?

I've read the guide but there doesn't seem to be any information on actually how you spot a mis-sold PPI

Did you want the PPI?
Do you still want it?
Do you think it would cover / would have covered you?
Did anyone "sell" it to you, or was it something you asked for?

Generally you know if you were mis-sold it or not.

The product is valid and serves a purpose. If you have it willingly and with reason then it is not mis-sold. If you have it but it is unsuitable or you were forced to have it or it doesnt cover you then you were mis-sold.
