My son is looking for a new laptop but it has to have a serial port for some fancy ECU reading device he uses for his trackday cars but has been finding that most laptops (unless you go hugely high end!) don't have the good old fashioned serial port that they used to
If anyone knows I'd be grateful as the info on the Dell website on such things is somewhat lacking!
You can get a USB to serial converter from Ebuyer ~ £8. This plugs into a USB port adn then you plug your serial device into it. With some software it is then mounted as a com port. A mate bought this and it works really well.

" I've just ordered the 1150 (2.6GHz) by phone - the spec is here (better than has been quoted):
http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/p...sdt1&l=en&s=bsd
Tip: - Phone up and INSIST on the spec on this page (inc dvd/cdrw) - they will quote a different spec, e.g. 2.4 instead of 2.6GHz, but stick to your guns. I was asked to go through the "customise & buy" section, but I refused as it comes up at a higher price!
Good luck! "
The details do come up as 2.4 GHz and dvd rom only !!
How did you find the higher spec for the same price?0 -
OK the dell site is running really slow now, seems quite a few people are buying the offers they have at present."An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind" - Mahatma Gandhi0

In terms of the Celeron processor the 2.2ghz Inspiron 1000 looks the better option as this has a larger cache. The 1150 has a 2.6ghz 128kb cache and so although it's has a faster speed it's likely to perform worse. The 128kb cache Celerons were notoriously poor and that was my impression on my old laptop. It doesn't specify cache size for the 2.4ghz processor but I think this will be 128 as well. Having said that for basic stuff it may not matter too much.0

Is this difficult to set up or would you expect your service provider to set this up for you when installing the broadband line, also how much does a typical wireless router cost?
