Having never had it myself, I did a quick google search and I think your quote is probably about right. This site gives a full price list for their gear and it is surprisingly quite cheap, I would have thought the costs would be higher but guess like anything, for the higher spec gear the cost will rise.

It's about right, for a halfway decent camera. You can look at different DIY ones in Maplin, eg for outdoors use you need a waterproof one with powerful infrared illumination

Pretty much all those DIY cameras will do what you want, just a case of how well they do it. If you've had a quote for someone to make the decisions for you and do the install, fair enough. It's not difficult once you've done it once or twice before, but approaching it cold there are a couple of potential trip-ups around socket types (scart/BNC/composite plus any audio feeds), tuning in of the TV/monitor, and how much IR illumination is needed.

BTW you do know the camera won't record the video if just going into a TV, so it is fine if you are in the same room as the monitor, useless if not. If you want it to record too, you need to account for that - a DVR is the best bet, ideally one designed for security cameras - ask your fitter for advice maybe.
  • i am certainly not one for paying for something when it is not needed however in a situation like this I would suggest letting the professionals deal with it, the initial quote you got sounds like it is fine.

Too many people think they can do everything themselves nowadays which leaves local businesses such as my own a bit screwed :)

Don't have a 'make do' job, let the people that know do it for you.

are you planning to record it?

without knowing what kit they are planning installing, it's difficult to comment on the value
