Claiming on Contents Insurance - Questions

Hi all,

Garage burst into flames today, gutted the garage. :( Luckily only singed the side of the house thank god!

I have contents insurance with Endsleigh. It's a rented property.

Firstly, do I have to notify the insurer without a certain amount of time? I'd rather wait until Monday so I can talk to the landlord directly about things.

I just wondered if white goods would be covered? There was a freezer, dryer and fridge freezer that were destroyed.

There was also a lot of tools for cars, bikes etc. Will those be covered?

I've scanned through the policy document but can't find the answer.

Thanks for the help :) What a day.........

  • 1) Not normally however additional damage caused by the delay in reporting would not be covered (within reason).... so if your roof developed a leak and you left it for 6 months you then would struggle to claim water damage for the items in the loft because you left it for 6 months

    2) If they are yours then they are your content. You will need to check your policy wording as it is not in the main dwelling and outhouses/ detached garages etc tend to have different limits

    3) Same as two above
  • On the first question, you will most likely be required to notify the claim as soon as is reasonably possible.

The insurer will only be able to decline the claim if you failed to do so, if the delay was material to their attempts to validate the claim.

For the other questions, as you can tell from II's answer, more info is required.

Many policies will cover contents of outbuildings as standard - check your policy schedule / policy book. The amount can vary from £1k to £10k on a standard policy. I think Endsleigh do cover contents of outbuildings but you would need to check the policy as to how much.

I would not delay contacting the insurer regarding this incident - your contents insurance is independent of your landlord. If the landlord has been negligent and contributed to the cause of the fire the your insurer will deal with this.
