Recorded Delivery Item Gone Walkabouts

I sold an electric shaver for £20ish on eBay and I sent it 2nd class recorded. This was at the start of the month. Just had a message from the buyer saying "RM left a card and when I contacted them, they said it had been sent back to the sender". He wanted to know if I had had it back. I replied no and said it might still be at the sorting office.
Anyway, I just had a look at the online recorded delivery report. It appears that it was received on the 03/10/2012 but the surname of the person is totally different.
The buyer wants a refund now as he has not received the item and says no one from his household has signed for it as he lives alone. Do I just go ahead and refund him?

You should ask your buyer to check with their neighbours to see if they have it.
Royal Mail recently started their "deliver to neighbour" service where if there is no one in to receive a package it will be left next door (unless you have opted out of this).
The signature received could be that of the neighbour.
Your neighbour may have just glanced at the card and assumed that the item was returned to the delivery office but this may not be the case.0
