Hi,
my mums just bought an old macbook, it has os 10.4.11 on it, i went to the apple website to upgrade to mountain lion but it says it must have snow leopard first but then I can't find snow leopard anywhere?

Don't know anything about Mac machines, but this might be it. Though by the size of it, it is likely just an update.
Best to go to a dedicated forum or a Hackintosh or similar forum, as they will understand the 'ins and outs'.0 -
that link is a security update for snow leopard, not actually snow leopard.
if its very old, it may not be capable of running mountain lion
do you know what model it is?
If not... you click the apple (top left) > About This Mac > More Info
Then look for the 'model identifier' in the main window
It will look something like: ModelX,Y
Where X and Y are numbers.
We can then tell you what the maximum OS will be.0 -
Assuming the model can be upgraded to Snow Leopard or above, apparently the official line is that you need to phone apple telephone sales and request to purchase a copy of Snow Leopard, from which you can use the app store to purchase further upgrades. However since it seems to runs Tiger by default I doubt it will support Mountain Lion.0
