Pls Help internet connection on laptop

Have a dell 6400 allset up with a netgear wireless modem router but my internet connection through internet explorer is slow (not just slow but near on dead)
my isp is aol i have not installed that on my laptop (not sure if have to) is there something i can do to help this .
Read somewhere that aol silver does not support wifi is this correct

Can you connect the laptop to the router using an ethernet cable and test the internet speed using wired connection?0

Agree with cledor. Connect with an ethernet cable (NOT USB) and see if there is any difference.
AOL supplies the service. BT supply the line to modem. The wireless router is totally independent.
For a speed test from a server.
It may, of course, be that you are too far out from the exchange to get decent speed. BT's web site used to offer a check of the maximum possible speed for a given post code, but I can't see it at the moment. Anyone know?0
