I have this problem too - I don't think it's the sweat remaining in the clothing I think it is the bacteria, so that as soon as we sweat onto the clothes again the bacteria do their worst. I am quite a sweaty person, and work in a gym which only adds to the problem. :o I use Mitchum and have tried some of the pharmacy type anti-perspirants.

I simply bleach my whites which works like a dream and have successfully tried white vinegar on my dark laundry after a tip from the Green and Ethical board. It's probably the acidity in the vinegar which kills the bacteria.

Do you already use a bio detergent? That should get rid of most biological based stains. Check the back of the box for the recommended temperature for that particular powder. Some enzymes don't work at too high a temp.

I read, not long ago, that asprins are best for getting sweat stains out of clothes.

Use plain ordinary asprins, two or three dissolved in 100ml of warm water and soak the stain in it.

I haven't tried it myself, but it's firmly fixed in my mind for the future.

    Hi far2812,

There's an existing thread with lots of suggestions that may help so I've added your thread to it to keep the ideas together.

  • Hello everyone - I know you can help me. My lovely hard working OH has a couple of work tops but one of them is horribly smelly in the armpit area. He's usually very clean and showers and deodorises every day but he's got a stinky top. I've tried washing it and washing it, soaking it in vinegar, soda crystals, even zoflora, hanging it on the line for days but nothing has shifted the stink.

Can anyone offer any advice other than to burn the top (ideally I'd like to rescue it as we have to pay for replacements).

    Thanks in advance.

I only buy the basics washing powder, and that seems fine for my clothes when I do them on the quick wash cycle. However the smelly men's clothes never seem to get clean unless I do a full length wash on them.

My question is, if I use a more expensive washing powder, will I be able to get away with the quick wash? And will it save me money even if the powder costs more?

    Thanks

i have the same problem Sharra, i have tried the so called upgrading to a more expensive brand but it didnt really work well enough to justify the expense.....i just stick with the basic liquid and stick in a scoop of soda crystals....

loads of threads on here about using the crystals and the merits of using washing powder/liquid at all! just do a search, i am useless at adding links sorry...

i have grated down some of the soap i was given for christmas, added some washing soda crystals and water, and have been putting the resulting gloop into the washing drawer. So far i haven't noticed anything i don't like the look or smell of..

    good luck
