Somewhere nice but reasonably priced in Durham / Newcastle areas

OH is 40 in June and would like to surprise him with a night away, preferably in a "country house" type hotel. Looking for somewhere in Durham / Newcastle / Hexham areas (north east, anyway!) that wouldn't completely break the bank. Can anyone suggest anywhere?

Might be too expensive, but it's worth it!

Thanks for both your ideas. Think Lumley castle will be a bit much after adding meals and already tried Walworth and they are full on the date I need.
    Any more suggestions please?

I visit Darlington on a regular basis and always stay at the same guest house but they only do B&B.
It`s very central for the town centre, about ten minutes walk and only costs about £30 a night each for an en-suite room, and they do a great breakfast
It`s AA3 star rated and there are plenty of places to eat out close by.

If this is any use to you I will give further details.
  • If you can give an indication of your budget it would help. Judges Hotel at Kirklevington near Yarm is lovely - but a bit expensive, a one-night Romantic Break is available but just on Saturday and Sunday nights I think at around £200 per couple but for that you get a sumptuous dinner, overnight stay and wonderful breakfast. I can't speak highly enough of the luxury, service and surroundings. If you had to pay for each element individually it would cost far more.

Just a quick update. Checked back at the Lumley Castle website (as nearly everywhere else is full!) and they have a deal that includes meals and works out cheaper than the cost i calculated. Have booked there and really looking forward to seeing OH's face!
    Thanks all!
