Water softener

Can anyone recommend a good water softener? One that you fit to your pipes, I don't want one of those huge things that i will need to build an extension to house.
We have just come back from York and in the space of two days there our eczema had totally cleared and I was able (much to my dismay) to do the washign up without my sensitive skin flaring up.
I am convinced that the water plays a part in the condition of our skin. And it was great to be able to switch the tap on and just drink from the tap without having to filter out the old nasties. Our water in Aldershot tastes like it's come straight from the lido at times.
Any suggestions gratefully received!
