Radiators heating up when water heating comes on!

Currently I have my water heating to come on each morning and evening for about 1hr, but I have noticed that even though I have not got the central heating set to come on at all, the radiators still heat up. Does anyone know if this should happen?, or is something wrong somewhere as I am fearful that this will be costing me more money as the radiators are heating up.

It was ok in the summer months as I had all the thermostats turned off, but the other day I turned them on as put the heating on manually for a couple of hours when it was a particularly cold evening.

So now I currently have the thermostats set on, with the central heating set OFF, but they still heat up when the water heating comes on.

Any advice/comments would be appreciated.

Sounds like a dodgy/stuck motorised valve.

There is usually a manual lever underneath (the end where the cable is). Try moving that but otherwise you may need a professional in to resolve the issue.

spot on valve is not closing the ch port, some can be refurbed some need replacement.

Just had a look this evening and there are three positions which the switch can move to, W, M, H.

I looks like it is stuck at the "H" position as if I turn off the water heating and then turn it back on it stays at "H", but if I push it up to "W" and then turn the central heating on it then moves down the "H" again. So looks like it can move all the way down the the "H" position but can't move back up.

Luckily I have Boiler and Central heating cover with British Gas, so have booked an engineer to come out and see if they can replace it at the same time as getting my annual boiler service.

Thanks for the replies helping pin point the faulty component =)

You don't necessarily need an engineer. Waggle the switch a few times and it may free it off. They usually fail after the summer when the CH is turned back on agin.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Hi macman,

I did give it a good couple of wiggles last night as well as this morning
but it still gets stuck. So hopefully BG will replace it when they come out,
albeit in just over a months time.

Macman, that thought had crossed my mind last night, but as there
was an electric cable coming out of the box, I didn't want to chance shorting something out, so didn't do it. I will just probably leave it as is and just get it changed as if its sticking now it will more than likely happen again as it looks quite old.

To be honest if it fails to come on for heating a waggle will usually free the limescale off it to allow the spindle to move across wheras a passing valve is normally misshaped internals.......usually. Bread and butter for bg but don't wait until the service to mention it, the engineer won't have time unless you have told them in advance.

    ollski,

I have booked an engineer to come out to find the fault, as well as booked my annual service, they have said they will combine both bookings for the same day / time rather than have two appointments.

When I booked the appointment, I could not find the option to tell them what I thought my problem was, so just had select "Unknow Fault", just hope they carry spares onboard, rather than have to go away to get one in then come back to install it.
  • I had to have a new motorised valve fitted today for the very same reason, hot water on only but the rads heated up as well. Its solved the problem if that helps
