we were both self employed and i have a strong feeling we had PPI on it.

Sounds like you had good reasons for PPI then as you had no employer benefits.

both of us being self employed at the time, there is a chance we were miss sold the ppi.

How does being self employed make it mis-sold?

Game over. Regulation didnt exist until January 2005. Any cases sold prior to that date give you no access to the FSCS.

Not only do you not appear to have a valid complaint reason, you dont appear to have anyone to complain to either.
