loft insulation from British Gas

Hi all,
I am researching why my house may be effected by condensation and mould and I think i'm going to start from the top with the loft!

I know that the guy who lived here before us was a bit of a .. shall we say 'DIY disaster' and although i'm not sure, i guess he insulated the loft himself..

now, i'm considering having the loft redone properly and noticed that British gas are offering free insulation.

so, my question is.. do they/will they fit free if you already have it or is it only for people who have no insulation at all?

I am going to try to call them soon to ask the same q but i thought i'd ask here 1st

Yes they do fit for free. They will come out check your current situation and then send contractors to do the job. I have just had my loft done and fully satisfied.

They will only do it for free if you have less than a certain thickness already. If you already have insulation, you'll have to pay.

condensation and mould is normally a result of inadequate ventilation

thanks nickj, yes thats why I am starting at the top.. i would like to have the loft insulated properly because i suspect (and will try to get up there tomorrow to check) that the insulation has been pushed into the eaves meaning that we have no ventilation up there..

I'm going to get up in the loft tomorrow with a tape measure to see how thick it currently is and how it looks.

Free insulation normally only applies if you have less than four inches already - this is how the grants from the governments work. You'd need to clear the loft before getting them in, otherwise they'll go nowhere near it. Be warned, it'll be one of the most filthy and itchy jobs you've ever done.
