error when trying system disk

Options
Hi

I ve got a toshiba laptop which wont start when trying to start it it comes up with an error at the beginning of its boot up check "media test failure check cable"
I ve had it in a local shop and they e tried a new hard disk in it but still has the same problem
I ve been trying to use the system disk but its goes so far then the error message "error checking for a player partition......please try again"

I have tried cancelling the lan setting in boot up at someones suggestion but then the error message changes to "no operating system detected"

Does anyone have an idea if theres anything i can try before i send it off toshiba(out of warranty) or is it most likely a hardware fault.

thanks in advance for any suggestions

This sounds correct to me, it's the error you would get when the laptop is trying to bootup from the harddrive and either the files on the harddrive or the harddrive itself is corrupt.

Normally a system disc either uses memory or the harddrive to store some files. If the harddrive is failing then it can't store any files on there. Looks to me as if the harddrive is failing.

Firstly is the system disc an installation disc (for example would you be able use the system disc to install the operating system on a new harddrive) or is it just a system disc that restores the files back to it's factory settings by copying files from a hidden partition ?

If the system disc is a full installation disc then you would need to get a new harddrive then try the system disc otherwise you have to get a new Windows disc.

It was the hard disc i first suspected but the repair shop tried a replacement with no joy.

I did trawl round the internet last night and found similiar fault...it appears it can be the ethernet cable/adaptor malfuntioning or poorly connected, or the hard disc not correctly seated and one poster reckoned that reseating his ram memory was enough to sort the problem out so its worth a quick look before sending it to toshiba.....but i think its most likely going to toshiba as im not confident to mess around inside the machine other than a brief look for any obvious loose cabling

It is a system restore disc but as i mentioned to the post above i tried copying xp home edition on today but with no luck.

Thanks very much for the reply and appreciated and ill post the eventual end result

    cheers
