But the day rate is higher. And skwewing your figures by leaving dozens of lights on overnight doesn't make for a very valid comparison.
You need to do a proper comparison.
The day rate is higher - yes.
The day rate may not be a lot higher.
For example.
Electricity
Asking about lowest costs for a 3000 unit standard meter.
19.760p, 14.980p above 728 kWh p.a.
For a total of 16.2
Doing the same for the same provider, with a 2000:1000 split leads to an average price of 16.7 per unit.
As the price of electricty for day and night rate varies by about 10p, very little would need moved over from day to night rate to make it worthwhile.0 -

It only takes a minute or two to determine the 'break even' point for using Economy 7.
On energyhelpline get a cost for your annual consumption on a single rate tariff.
Then do the same with, say, 20% usage on off-peak and get a cost. As said above, Scottish Power are about the best for E7 and on their April 2014 fix, the break even point is less than 15% on E7.
If you have an older(hence less efficient) gas boiler - particularly with pilot light, it can make sense to turn off boiler for months when you don't require heating, and heat water with immersion heater on off-peak.0
