scottish council tax query

hi,

i rented out my flat, after finding better paid work in another part of scotland, my tenant is paying the council tax on it as a single man.

ive just been bumming around staying with friends here and there for a few years now. ive met a girl and we plan to move in together, what i want to know is that when i reappear on the council tax system with her, do they start asking where ive been ect ? or is it just a case of registering and paying.

ive been told they dont ask, but wanted to be sure, any help appreciated thanks

If they do, tell the truth, or if it's too much hassle, Just say you've been abroad, travelling.
  • Hi Johnnyren,

I used to work in Council Tax offices for 2 different LA's and I probably shouldn't say this but it really just depends on who you get on the phone and how lucky you are!

Most good staff will ask if you have been resident in the area before and if you say yes they will ask where in order to link up the customer.

If you are moving back into your own property they may ask questions if your tenant hasn't paid in full. When you moved out they should have asked for a contact address for you at that point unless your tenant had a tenancy agreement to take on the whole property. I think you'll be ok but you may want to ask parents, friens or relatives if they would be willing to confirm if needs be. Or if you can prove through an employer you were residing elsewhere at the time that should be acceptable.
