Santander international transfer fees...

Santander told me that they could tell me what the fee asked by the intermediary bank dealing with my international money transfer, would be for an amount given. Neither could they tell which bank it would be in fact they were asking me to accept to do the transfer 'blind' in relation to this 'middle-man' fee. It seems like financial suicide to me. So I would like some advice please.
