Very iffy situation.... what a nightmare for those who already own houses and dont know about it!!
I am currently buying a house - we can get insurance to cover the eventuality that the church might try and get money from us, but there is a clause which says if u tell your neighbours about the situation, your insurance is made invalid!!!!!:eek:

Baldrick, does it have to be this way? Our valued friendship ending with me cutting you up into strips and telling the prince that you walked over a very sharp cattle grid in an extremely heavy hat?

And you read about the couple in Warwickshire yeah? The ones who ended up paying £350,000 and being made homeless......?Baldrick, does it have to be this way? And? I will be moving into a small village. If the church decided to sting ME for money, it wouldnt be shared between many properties so i may be looking at shelling out what, to me, would be a fortune!! And which could in theory render me homeless
I hate insurance as much as the next person. But in this case, i reckon it would be worth the £100 one off payment!Baldrick, does it have to be this way? This is a point that is often forgotton when looking at chancel liability insurance. If my local parish church needed repairs costing £350,000, and there were 1000 equally sized properties in the parish (a very low estimate for a built up parish), then my liability would be £350.
Given that I might not even live in an eligable parish, and if I do the chances of the church exercising these powers successfully are very low, I don't think it's worth paying £24 for my conveyancer to do a search.
I'm also amazed there isn't somewhere collating the results of all these searches people are doing - all it needs is a wiki or forum where people can post "I live in x parish, I had a search done and it came back as not being elibible)Note: Unless otherwise stated, my property related posts refer to England & Wales. Please make sure you state if you are discussing Scotland or elsewhere as laws differ.0 -

If they had only registered against one or two that one or two could be asked to pay the whole cost and they they could try to get the money back from the others - but I wouldn't give much for their chances.
As Christian I think the whole thing is appalling and can't understand why they didn't simply abolish it altogether when they had the chance instead of coming up with this half-baked gradual process that we are now suffering from.
Christianity isn't about preserving old buildings and more harm is done to Christian witness by asking people who may have no interest in God for money than letting an old building fall down. That's about a love of architecture and old buildings, not God.
Most village church communities could meet in a room in the local pub. An Anglican Church in a Southampton commuter village near me has its main meeting in the local secondary school because there is no room in the Church. In cities in some places the old church buildings are not big enough. My daughter was married in a warehouse building in Sheffield that her then church uses and now attends a Church that meets in an industrial unit on an industrial estate in Derby.
The whole thing is a gigantic embarrassment to most Christians and I cannot imagine they would have been at all worried if the Chancel Repair Liability had simply been abolished.RICHARD WEBSTER
As a retired conveyancing solicitor I believe the information given in the post to be useful assuming any properties concerned are in England/Wales but I accept no liability for it.0
