Left Rented Property, Still Paying Bills for Ex-Partner- How to Cancel?

I'm writing this on behalf of my girlfriend, who is in a horrible situation.

She split up with her emotionally abusive ex some months ago, but they were still living together in the same rented property until a couple of weeks ago. The emotional abuse often took the form of monetary exploitation, and she ended up paying pretty much all the bills in her own name- gas and electricity in particular.

She no longer lives in the flat, and wants to cancel the bills. The problem is that her ex, controlling as ever, refuses to co-operate and isn't going to let anyone in to take a meter reading. What can she do? Surely it can't be legal for her ex to perpetually leech her like this?

Her ex has nothing to do with her ability to tell the utility company that she has moved out and get a final bill.

Simply phone the company and tell them you have moved out and on what date. If there is any exiisting debt they may require proof of where she lives now.

At worst she will get an estimated final bill but if she has kept the supplier up to date with meter readings this wont be an issue.
