Scottish Power Fixed Price April 2014 may close tonight plus rant at Scottish Power!

Just a quick heads up for those considering this tariff that it may be ending for new applications tonight.

I had requested an online quote the other day and received a call earlier tonight to ask if I wanted to switch to this tariff. I said I didn't think I wanted to switch as the Warm Home Discount (broader group) which I receive from British Gas wouldn't apply to Scottish Power as each company has different criteria.

The salesperson then, in a round about way, said that the tariff would close tonight. He did that ridiculous salesperson thing by saying but not saying if you know what I mean! Whether this is true or he was bluffing to get a sale I thought I should post on here anyway to let those who are considering this tariff know.

On a side note I find that this sort of tactic, "Im not saying what is happening but read between the lines" etc, really reinforces the public's negative image of energy selling!

He then referred me to an 0800 number to double check my Warm Home Discount eligibility. This was basically the main sales line and the advisor and her manager had no idea about how the scheme works. She kept saying that you apply through the DWP and that the criteria is the same for every company which is blatantly untrue. I know that advisors can't know everything but a quick search of her own company's website would confirm this!

What worries me is that although I can manage to investigate these things online and question people on the phone is this the case for elderly and disabled people? They may trust the immediate advice given and simply give up.

Anyway, rant over but I'd be interested in your thoughts and experiences on any of the issues raised.

David, my on-line energy saver 15 ends on the 30th november, is it better for me to transfer to the fixed-price tarrif ? Thankyou for your help .
old enough for my bones to feel the cold .
  • I just had an "out of the blue" call from Scottish Power saying they could save me loads of money because I'm currently with British Gas. The sales person said that today is the last day to get this deal so you need to hurry! She then went on to say, "Have you not seen the TV... even Martin Lewis is telling everyone to sign up to the Online Fixed Price Energy April 2014" I asked if there was details about this offer on there website and she said yes, "please go to spenergy.co.uk and its all there" I did this and that website does not exist, haha. Is this deal really worth signing up for or is it just another sales pitch? I don't really understand all the T&Cs etc and I no most of these company's sales people always forget to tell you the "important details" just so they can get another sale.

You should check your annual kWh against the prices quoted - uSwitch is good for this but there are other comparison sites available, or our quote tool is here: https://quote.scottishpower.co.uk/nsearch/Default.aspx

At the end of the day, you don't have to switch if you don't want to. Bear in mind whether you have a fixed deal or not. If not then its advisable to get one now before the price increases take effect.

If you need any more help you can e-mail me at onlinecomplaints@scottishpower.com Thanks David @ ScottishPower

  • I am currently with British Gas and just had another letter saying they are putting the prices up again "surprise surprise" Is there anything I need to look out for when changing over to a new company, plan? I don't want to sign up and then a month or so down the line relies I missed something. I have read about people signing up for a "better deal" and then after they signed up it is not what they were expecting or they end up paying more etc and they are tied into it.

David, SueLizab asked if it would be better for her to switch to the 2014 tariff, NOT if she could! She knows that she can! You are supposed to be on this forum to help!

I selected the April 2014 deal using the link on this site but they put me on the November 2014. The confirmation email did not state which tariff I was on so I did not find out about the error until a received a letter in the post a while later. I called Scottish Power twice but both times the 'IT system' was down and they said they would call back. They did not!
I instead sent an email to the address you gave here and still have not got a reply. What should I do to get a response?
