Changing shower tray to wet room style shower tray

Hi,
I'm going to have my en suite re-tiled in the near future and was considering changing my shower tray.
I currently have a fairly standard white shower tray which you need to step up into very slightly and also itself has a bit of a lip on it and a drop down about an inch and a half to its floor. However what I'd really like is a flat/tiled shower tray to match whatever tiles are on the walls. I know this would present a problem of water spilling out into the rest of the bathroom if there was no lip or an inadequate slope.
However I'm guessing that the bottom of the walls would need to be joined and sealed to this tray before tiling. With removal of the old tray there would be around 2-3 inches where waterproof board could be fixed to the wall (stud wall) and sealed to the tray.
I'm just trying to establish if this is a feasible option? or if it would be simpler and a lot cheaper to just stick with a standard white shower tray?
Thanks,
Ben
