Do You Try To Persuade Other People Not to Spend Money?
Comments
-
I must admit, once I'd left home & was earning my own money, I didn't appreciate my mum commenting on how much I spent on something, & I would often just spend the money out of sheer devilment. Being older & wiser now, I still wouldn't like her doing it but I might give the matter a bit more thought. However, I really wouldn't like a colleague or neighbour commenting negatively on the cost of something I wanted to buy, because they don't know enough about my business to be able to judge whether I can afford it. I don't mind someone giving an opinion on whether something's the right sort of thing to buy in terms of style, design or fit, but not on the cost itself.
The only times I comment on how other people spend money is if they claim to be broke then spend in a way that I think is daft. For instance, some years ago a friend asked to borrow some money as she was desperate. I loaned her either £10 or £20 (can't remember which, I just know it was one note), assuming that it was to get something her children needed, & then watched open-mouthed as she went into the supermarket & got a bottle of wine & 20 cigarettes!BSC #53 - "Never mistake activity for achievement."

I think I've used the wrong word for it. We had a massive tree in the garden that we have cut down and were left with loads of branches that were too much to go in the car and he wanted to buy this machine - mulcher? Something like that - he wanted to buy it to shred the tree so that it could all be bagged up and taken to the tip or somewhere. However, we've just had a fine old time burning it.The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0 -
What Tesco voucher site? I remember seeing a black blog type site before but lost the address ages ago. have you got the link? Sorry to get off topic

Its not as good as it used to be though, they are really tightening up and a lot of these codes do not work. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0 -
yes I do mention this site to people. but there is a bit of leading a horse to water, but not getting it to drink going. For example I put the link to here to my sis, and she was really pleased and told all of her friends and they all save money one way or another.
On the other hand one of my other sisters is thinking about going bankrupt. her solution to debt? buy another jewel encrusted ring (ie about £1000 a time). I can't just tell her as we barely speak anyway, so have to tell my mum about it and for her to work it into the conversation.
So yes I do mention it, but not to everyone

Sometimes though being this way can lead to rewards, as people give you moneysaving tips of their own or point the way to bargains that you may not know about. I find this happens quite frequently. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0

I know you have already done it now, but my neighbour rung the council and they
brought a shredder/mulcher round and shredded his tree, I think they charged about £5, May be of use to someone else though.Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination:beer:

I will keep that in mind. We have another big tree to come down at some time. Its a scots pine and they grow very tall. so it has to go unfortunately. Its a lovely tree though. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0 -
Hmm did I post this without realising?! I am known as the work financial adviser and people are always asking me what to do about stuff. I've signed many people up to this site and the girl I work with the most has got a free holiday from Tesco this year and saved over £3000 in interest by moving a loan onto a credit card and paying it off! My DH and his mates always groan when us wives get together because where some peeps are like "oh I spent so much money coz I'm so rich" we're always saying "oh I got this amazing bargain from blah blah blah!"Debt: 16/04/2007:TOTAL DEBT [strike]£92727.75[/strike] £49395.47:eek:   £43332.28 repaid 100.77% of £43000 target.MFiT T2: Debt [STRIKE]£52856.59[/STRIKE] £6316.14 £46540.45 repaid 101.17% of £46000 target.2013 Target: completely clear my [STRIKE]£6316.14[/STRIKE] £0 mortgage debt. £6316.14 100% repaid.0

I wish that someone had told me a few years ago! I have been supporting myself since I was 18 and in full time employment, bought a flat with my then partner, and we gradually got ourselves into debt. When we broke up, in early 2001, I ended up with the debts, as they were all in my name (stupid I know) and I am still paying them off. Admittedly, my now husband and me have added to the debt a bit, although I couldn't tell you what we spent the money on, and we are aiming to pay it all off for xmas 2008. We have only just got married (less than 3 weeks ago!) and would love to have children, but can't afford it.
If only someone had advised me all those years ago! So, please, keep lecturing and advising...if you help only one person, then it is well worth it!0 -
I've tried doing it with my family, but they rarely listen going for the easy option usually rather than shopping around, although someone did call me the other day as they had been advised by my father that I knew how to save money on gas and electric.
I now find myself doing it to my customers, the poor things are stuck with me for an hour so have to listen0
