Soda crystals you will find in the Supermarket in the same area as the wash powders. They are not actually crystals, but come in powder form in a bag roughly the size of a bag of flour and cost approx 70p (give or take a few pence) - it has many other uses than just washing so visit their website for a good all round view of the potential Cleaning Tasks

White vinegar *can* be bought in the supermarkets - same aisle as Malt vinegar - but you can get a better deal if you have a chinese supermarket around where you can buy it in larger quantities. Like the soda crystals, it has many other uses than just for laundry. Check out this older thread

I don't think I'm quite ready to give up my Ariel yet though!
I took the plunge and gave up using Ariel for my whites after reading someones post about Napisan. I now use a very cheap biological powder for every wash but add a spoonful of Napisan to my whites wash. A few weeks on and they are still white.

I would like to thank everyone for a great thread!
I had just assumed there were two tablets in the bag cause you needed two tablets for a wash!
After seeing this thread have started using just the one tesco 2 in 1 tab and have not noticed any difference in my washing....
I just keep going over to touch and smell it ....wow....

Thanks to everyone who has ever posted on Vinegar - went to the website that Queenie pointed me in the direction of via the link to the older site, and found some stuff about vinegar being good for smelly feet.

OH has 'feet from hell' (don't tell him I out this on here, he'll have a fit lol), got him to use some vinegar on the hooves last night - miracle!

So, praise be - I've seen the light! :T

Off to the shops for vinegar and soda crystals later today!

For large quantities of white vinegar you can also try greengrocers as they keep 5 litre containers of vinegar in for pickling etc. My local one has 5 litres of white vinegar for £1.20.

I noticed Tesco sell a larger 1.5lt bottle of distilled vinegar (Sarsons) but it says "for pickling" so does this mean it's had stuff like spices added to it or is it exactly the same as the smaller 500ml bottle distilled vinegar?

I can't get to a store to check out the labels and it doesn't give that sort of info online, so I'd be grateful if anyone could have a look for me please :)

    Re "the feet from hell"

If you sprinkle bicarb of soda with a few drops of tea tree essential oil inside shoes and slippers etc - leave overnight and then remove it from footwear - that helps in cases like athlete's foot etc.

Sweaty socks etc- wash in vinegar- or soak in bucket in vinegar solution.

  • I've noticed that since using vinegar in my wash, my black or navy blue socks now are much softer and leave tons of lint, so that when I take my socks off the soles of my feet look really grubby! Has anyone else noticed this? It's not really a problem but potentially embarrassing if I have 'female company', (which isn't that often).
