Units Usage is there a way?

I recently received my gas bill off southern electric it reads like somebodys homework thats got too many corrections, credits, and so on, but one thing that I cannot figure out is that the first X Kwh units are charged at the higher rate, the second set of Units in Kwh are charged at a discounted rate.
when prices increase or decrease accordingly on my bill it will show x kwh charged at the higher rate and so on, now here is my question to all those in the know because of the changes in fuel prices what is the total amount of units in Kwh for a quaterly bill on the higher rate and what are the total Kwh for the discounted units for the three month period (quaterly). I am looking at the quaterly charges on my bills and wonder where the magical figure is that suddenly tips the figure over from its normal kilowat hour charges to the discounted charges because my bills seem to show it changes? has anyone else noticed, look at your gas bill, look at your first set of figures in Kwh, then look at your discounted kwh figures now, look at another bill and compare the those bills?
hope I am making sense I was wondering if anyone was aware of the changes on each quaterly bill.

in other words what volume of gas used in Kwhs has to be used before it goes onto the discounted figure?

It varies from company to company; however will be on your bill.

For most it is 1143kWh per quarter at the higher rate(usually called tier1) then the rest at the lower price(tier 2)

For electricity it is normally 225kWh per quarter at tier 1.

If the billing period is longer or shorter than a quarter it is charged pro-rata.

Some tariffs have a standing charge and one flat rate; while others like Ebico have no standing charge and charge all at same rate.
  • It sounds to me like you might be on a plan where the first x Kwh are charged at one rate and then discounted over a certain usage level. I had one like that once, and didn't know it.
If you are it will be on your agreement with your supplier.
I know that calling them can be a bit of a trial, but you may wish to ask for details of your existing plan.

NO, its no plan its just the standard quarterly bill payable by cash or cheque
needless to say southern have turned out for me to be one of the worst to understand supplier of bills! I have decided to switch to ebico as they have a much more simpler pricing structure and it doesnt matter where you live unlike some companys that ask for your post code before supplying information.
Sadly both gas and electric companys (of any persuasian) seem to be on a win win. Sad was the day that it became a privatised industry now its all about share holders and profit. The regulators seem weak and suppliers make work arounds such as come to us for dual fuel for discount, or come to us in a lock in contract.

A lot of suppliers have a two tier tariff now, for some it is the default tariff. Basically instead of paying a separate standing charge they load it onto the unit rates for the first bit you use.

With regards to ebico, they are a good company and do have a simpler structure, but your electricity prices still vary depending on where you live :)
