New eBay seller - PayPal issues

Hi, I'm trying to take the plunge and sell on eBay, but I'm uncertain about a few things. I hope you more experienced sellers can advise.
1) I'm using an old PayPal account that I probably haven't used for about 6 or 7 years and I seem to be logged out every 30 seconds or so. Almost every page I navigate to I have to enter my log-in details at least once, but sometimes two or three times. Is this typical?
2) I'm trying to get verified on PayPal. I've entered my bank details. Do I also need to set up the direct debit. If it not compulsory then I'd rather not.
3) I set up my PayPal account with my full version of my forename. I almost never use this name online. It's a sort of crude security system. I would like to use a shorter version of this for eBay. Would this be acceptable to eBay or would it look suspicious? Would buyers think it dodgy? My name is unusual and uncommon so it's not like using Christopher and Chris, more like using Christopher and Tophe.
