2nd card for a family member

Can anyone advise on the following...

I have a bank account which I want a second ATM card for so I can give it to a relative so they can use it.

Should I ring my bank and request a second card in their name? or in my name and just give it to them to use?

Thanks in advance.

You can not have a second person with a card on your bank account unlessyou have a joint account with them.

If you request a card in their name it will be refused. Probably if you request a second card in your name they will stop the first card on the presumption of lost or stolen.

If you give somebody else your card and PIN then you are also in breach of T&Cs.

Bottom line - you need a joint account

  • I dont know of a current account that allows you to have a second card for yourself. Even if they did then you'd have issues by giving it to a third party as you'd be breaching the terms of never sharing your pin etc.

Some banks (eg Natwest) allow you to add an authorised user to your current account and you can give them a cashcard or debit card and set what they can and cant do. Other banks dont have this facility and the only option to give someone else a card is for the account to be made a joint account with that person which creates a financial association, means decisions are based on both your histories etc (eg Barclays)

Probably best to call your bank, say what you are trying to achieve and see what options they have available

Not true, Natwest allow you to have an authorised person without it being a joint account with them but not all banks have this

Which of their current accounts allow that?

  • We had it when I was both Black and Select so I'd say all the standard and packaged accounts... I guess maybe not the Basic but never was inclined to ask

Adv Gold doesn't have it (my current acc) as I looked into this for my daughter and I can find no mention of additional card holders apart from CCs. Are you sure that it is still the case as you say 'when I was both Black and Select'
Select is what used to be called a standard personal account however since a Black account is a private (as opposed to personal) account with a hefty £24 pm fee then it may do

Any account that has a card. You need to add them as a third party and fill in a cashcard/service card request form.

Bear in mind that it will give them FULL access to the account, not just a card though. It's like it being a joint account but without them actually owning the account.

You need to ask to add a third party, not an additional card holder. Your daughter must be over 18 to be added to your account and as above will have FULL access to your account.
  • I would advise you don't do this, but instead tell the relative to get their own account at a bank, and transfer money to them to take out with the card on their own account.

If you do wish to share an account, then a savings account may be a good idea, as you won't be financially linked, nor will the relative be able to run up debt.

I was Select when I set it up and then upgraded to Black and was able to retain it - they just got a new "Private" card as did I. I have since closed the account hence the past tense.

There was noting in the T&Cs about it but the branch staff said you could do it when I was moaning to them about Barclays :)
