    laptop - 90W (x2?)
    TV - 100W
    PS3 - 130W

    So about 410W per hour

Even if they don't sleep, that's less than 10kWh per day.

    Where's the other 20kWh going?

PS3,X-box,tv,laptops overdosing by two teenage boys

Probably used between 30-40 kwh during the holidays when normally it's between 20-30 kwh.

When you see the Xbox on and paused do you turn it off? They probably can't be bothered to hit save and turn it off and then wait for it to come back on later...I'd be unplugging it every time I see it.

I sometimes wonder about this. If the xbox, or any other applicance, is on standby, it is, so we are told, using a significant amount of energy in the form of electricity. So where is that energy going? It must be dissipated as heat, and so it is therefore heating the room up, so in theory your central heating should be under a slightly lower load, so less gas is being used. So maybe you don't actually loose out, or am I missing something?

Chances are the thermostat will be in another room, so unless you have TRVs, its unlikely to make a difference. You'll likely be using 250W, with 100W going up in heat.

You would mean using 100W with 100W going up in heat. All energy goes somewhere and always ends up as heat. You could have a room full of 20 Xbox's consuming a total of 2kW of energy and it's the same as having a 2kW heater. and....Although a power supply might be rated at 250W it isn't actually using 250W.

Gas is cheaper than electricity so it's cheaper to use as little electricity as possible and get the rooms heat requirements from central heating.

Much more likely to be your heating on longer/higher in the day with them at home.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Since I and my wife retired and are in all day, except when we are on holiday, we have used more gas and electricity than when we both worked.

Simple really, if you are in and the heating is on you use more gas, and if the TV and /or radio and computers and lights are on more than before you use more electricity.

I often wonder why people seem surprised they use more gas and electricity when the house is occupied more than before.

When we both worked we used about 16,000 kWh of gas and 3700 kWh of electricity a year.

Now it is nearly 18,000 kWh of gas and 5,000 kWh of electricity a year.
