DECT phone batteries?

We have a twin set of DECT phones - "Philips 1212". They were refurbished from ebay (lesson learnt there, I know...) and the battery life is dire.
I know it's a silly question, but can I replace the rechargeable batteries with similar capacity rechargables? I always thought that the battery pack in DECT phones had to be bought from the manufacturer but looking at the ones in this set, they look like regular AAA batteries.
I paid around £15-£20 quid for this set and don't want it to have gone to waste...
Thanks for any help.

You can replace the batteries with similar rechargeables, we did in our Philips DECT phoneEver stop to think and forget to start again?0

They have refurbished the phone and not renewed the batteries. Any similar strength batteries will do.Retail is the only therapy that works0

Make sure the batteries have a similar chemistry to the old ones (there is a difference between NiCd, NiMh and Li-Ion) , also note that some AAA rechargeables are slightly longer physically than others.0
