how to stop 8 month pup "annoying" older dog
easy
Hi everyone.
We have an 8 month old crossbreed pup - Blaze, full of life, and apparently full of testosterone too - he is constantly trying to hump our 7 year old spaniel !!!!! - Posy (yes, she is spayed).
Up until the last few weeks they have got on famously, but now he won't leave her alone. She occasionally snaps at him, he finds this great fun, chases off round the room, but is soon back again, and up to it. Bless her, Posy is looking really fed up, and chooses not to go out in the garden unless we go too to tell Blaze off.
when we first got Blaze, I discussed whether we would need to have him neutered. Our Vets stance is they prefer not to unless his behaviour is a problem - yes this is a problem - and not before 12 months, so we have to deal with this for now.
TBH humping isn't the only way Blaze annoys Posy. If he isn't doing that, then he licks at her face and eyes, getting in her way as she walks round the house. Currently I seem to spend 90% of my waking hours saying "Blaze, NO!", and moving him away from poor Posy.
Any hints ??

My labradoodle who is 2 can be a bit like that.. (not the humping bit... however she occasionally takes the fluffy cushion from my settee and humps that a couple of times)
She pesters other dogs and i seem to say Stop it to her over and over again.. she does not seem to leave them alone.. even when they go and lie down she wil stand over them generally just being a nuisance
its really annoying..
doesnt help you but just wanted to let you know its not just your dog...0 -
For management - physically stop it. Babybates are useful, as are crates (for either dog - or both). A houseline (lightweight lead with no handle on it - so it can't catch on anything) left on Blaze may help you grab him when you see him about to bother Posy too.
Training-wise, teach him an alternative behaviour. Rather than just saying no to him and moving him, encourage him to leave Posy in favour of a game of tuggy with you - you can get lightweight fleece tuggies that fit in your pocket, or you could put a trigger hook on and clip to your clothes to have on you all the time. Once you've done it often enough, his default behaviour when overexcited should be to go to you for a game of tuggy, instead of to pester Posy.0 -

I used to have to put my puppy in his crate to give my older dog a bit of time out.
He would've pestered the life out of her if I'd left him to his own devices and it just wasn't fair on her.
Otherwise I'd let her go in her basket in another room so the puppy couldn't hassle her and she could have a snooze in peace.0 -
But it is not just pestering as such - is the humping as the OP says.....
I had a little french bulldog trying to hump my Zara last week... yup... french bulldog - my Zara... on open green space with owner nowhere to be seen (as usual), very VERY annoying... and lucky he was that she did not get him - she was too busy with 2 rubber balls in her mouth to pay any attention to him but annoyed the hell out of me.. why the little sod was not neutered..grrr0 -
My dog, Truffle is neutered and has a male border terrier friend, suddenly after knowing him for over 2 years Truffle has started humping him, it's not all the time, generally towards the end of our walk. So our walks together now consist of me pulling Truffle away and distracting him with a stick or a ball. He stops for a while and then does it again. The other dog doesn't care and just carries on with what he's doing. The other dog is extremely easy going and won't tell Truffle off. I'll be interested to read what advice is given on here. Good luck with your pup.:)0
