  • thanks for all your replies.

He is not willing to negotiate on the price. I told him we were no longer interested. Asked for the deposit back he said no, i just walked away. I do not want anything else to do with him.

I know it is just metal but it was beautiful!!!

next time we will be much less hasty - you live and learn!!

I would pursue him for the deposit back as he misrepresented the car. If he refuses then tell him you will call his finance co to tell them he is trying to sell
  • I have already told them anyway when I rang after the HPI. But I think it was his girlfriends car, so may ring and give them his number, cause they seemed very interested they were selling it. Not really the kind of person who could use that as leverage. Took me all day to get up the courage to ring and tell him we did want to buy it. I would make a rubbish business woman - probably why I am a social worker!!!!
  • Sounds like other posters have given you good advice here and you've walked away from this private seller trying to flog a real pup.

This sort of deal should have you running for the hills...it's only a car at the end of the day and there's masses of used cars for sale across the UK. To buy one clearly clocked and with outstanding finance on it from a private seller is a nightmare you can't risk taking on.

VW made millions of Golfs, you can find one without the scary side effects easily! If it was a hard-to-find rare car I'd understand you thinking twice, but when you spend your career giving people sage sound basic life advice (as you do)..take some yourself and recognise a big smelly risky sale on an easy to find 8 yr old hatchback when it presents itself! You don't need to take risks like that just to get a set of wheels.

    I'm pleased you walked away.

I echo all of the above.

It may have cost you £100,but it could have cost you more in the long run.

Well done for having the courage to walk away, and also for seeking advice.

    Ken.
