Saw a notice in my local post office today stating that anyone who dosent want to pay their phone bill by direct debit can pay it through the post office for free. Its been brought in to stop BT forcing people to open bank accounts to pay their phone bills by DD.The woman also said that BT are going to start charging people who leave them, starting from next month,so anyone thinking of leaving i would suggest to do it now.

BT has dropped that £5 'leaving fee' they planned to introduce from 1/5/07.
It has always been free to pay your BT bill at the Post Office - it's just your bill was £1 per month more than if you paid by DD.
Clever (but untruthful) marketing.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
I am only passing on what i was told today, how was i supposed to know it wasnt true,im not a mind reader.I will pass your comment on to the post office worker,im sure she will be happy at being called a liar.0

I don't think Heinz meant what he said to be taken that way. He was just clarifying the situation, and taking a cynical (but honest) view on the way BT are marketing what's happened43580 -
How do you know what Heinz meant, unlike me you must be a mind reader.I get so !!!!!! off with posting things on this forum in the belief it will help someone and save them money(thats what the forum is for after all),only for some smarta**e to come along and shoot it down in flames.0

I think the notice in the Post Office is a (clever but untrue) way of getting people to use the PO.
I wasnt aware that BT were forcing people to open bank accounts. They offer numerous ways to pay. They have always charged more to pay by non dd.
The Post Office havent got anything to shout about, they charge more if you pay for their phone service by non dd. The very same phone service that is under investigation by Ofcom for misselling in Post Offices.Unfortunately you cant believe everything your local PO clerk tells you.0 -
They are forcing people to open bank accounts just like Virgin are topay their phone bill by DD or face a £4.50 charge on top of their phone bill.Of course their are numerous ways to pay your bills but none that i know of that dosent incur a charge except by paying DD.Now that may suit some people but it dosent suit everyone, yet the people who dont wish to pay by DD are penalised by b eing forced to pay by DD to save having to pay this £4.50 penalty.0

Then I suggest you don't bother posting at all with that attitude.
Far from "shooting you down in flames", Heinz is THE most helpful person on the telephone board and doesn't deserve abuse from someone who so obviously got it wrong and uses abuse to cover their embarrasment.
I am preparing myself for a tirade too as the other supporter of Heinz got also.0 -

Get your facts right.Their has always been a charge if you dont pay by d/d at the moment its £1 a month more for line rental ,and its going to be £1.50p a month more. All BT have done is put it up by 50p a month. Did you complain when it was a £1.
They are not forcing people to open bank accounts the choice is theirs.Their are plenty of other payment options.
Heres proof that the £5 leaving fee has been dropped you might care to show it to the kind lady in the Post Office.
