Question about compression fitting or alternative

Here is the cold water supply coming out of the wall and into my cistern.

I am now replacing the cistern with a top-fill type. I was going to cut the pipe here

and use a compression fitting to a flexible hose. However, when I feel around the back of the pipe, it seems that solder has run all the way down from the upper elbow to the lower. There is no part of the pipe (it's only an inch or so) which is round.

I don't think I will be able to get an olive over the pipe. Is a push-fit connector any more forgiving, or can you suggest a better idea. It's all going to be boxed in, so it doesn't matter if it's a bit ugly. I don't think I have the room to keep the last elbow and use the screw fitting.
Thanks for your help.

You simply need to clean up the pipe with some emery tape or cut a strip yourself from a sheet. Solder is soft so just sand it until you see clean copper all round.

  • Thanks espresso. Seems like a lot of solder on there. I guess I will just have to do a lot of sanding. :)

You can heat it with a gas torch until the solder melts and then wipe it with some steel wool. (in pliers, cos it'll be hot)
