What to do about old cat!

Hi,

Recently my 15 year old cat has really gone downhill to the point where she is barely eating, can't really relax sitting down and is pooing everywhere and anywhere!

We are going to take her to the vets on Friday and we think the dreaded decision is going to be made!

I have been upset about it and I really don't know if I should even go with my dad. The cat is mostly "mine" but the last 6 months I moved out of my parents house and it did not seem sensible to take her with me so they have been looking after her!

I think the cat would want me to go (I know that sounds stupid!!!) so I will definitely go but should I be in there when they actually put her to sleep ( assuming that's what will happen) will I regret it if I don't?

Thanks for any help!

Michael

If she's off her food, it may well be time for her to go. I've always been there when we've had to have our cats put to sleep. I feel I owe it to them, and it's a very gentle process (in my experience anyway). They shave a front leg, give an injection and the cat just goes to sleep in a few seconds. I obviously can't say if you'd regret not going, but I will always go for mine.

Sorry to hear that :( it's always so difficult. Had to have one of mine PTS a few months ago and it wouldn't have crossed my mind not to stay with him TBH. I also took his favourite manky blanket for that trip because I wanted him to have something "from home" with him.

it's very hard to see any pet suffer with old age and you will need to think of her quality of life.

When pets stop eating and don't enjoying going out, and I should think that now she is messing in the house, she is suffering with organ failure, I think it's time to be a responsible pet owner and do one last kind thing for them and let them go peacefully with the help of your vet.

I have had to let three of my dogs go in the last 3 years and it's the hardest decision to make but it has also been the kindest.

Your poor cat does sound as if she's suffering now and we mustn't let them carry on just because we don't want to feel sad.

If she's as bad as she sounds, I don't think I could let her suffer for another 3 days :(

Totally with you on this, from the info given it does sound like the time has come, sorry OP.

You are right in that it's kinder to let her go now and not wait until Friday. Would your vet come out so that she can go peacefully at home, and then she wouldn't notice so much if it became too much for you to bear and you had to leave the room.

    I really feel for you.

Thanks for all the replies. We did take her today because she looks so fragile and we had to put her down. She didn't even put up much of a fight which is very unlike her.

As you say it is hard but is the kindest thing. The worst thing is she was still fairly active and was even jumping up and down fences today!

However, I think with her not eating and what she does comes straight back out, she was only going to get worse so I'm am just telling myself I have saved her from suffering more especially with the days becoming colder and colder!

((hugs)) You did the most loving and unselfish thing you could do for your girl. It really is better to do it at the right time or even a few days early than a few days too late. IME it is tough knowing they were rallying on the last day but is is MUCH harder discovering they have been in pain and you didn't know (cats hide it well). :(

  • Really sorry to read about your cat . We had one of our PTS 2 yrs ago and stayed with him at the end . It was peaceful for him but it was heartbreaking for us . We were reassured by the vet that it was the right thing to do for him . Hope you will find comfort that you did your best for your pet . Best wishes .

You did the right thing - always hard to do but we owe it to our pets to make that final decision. Best wishes...
