I wonder if anyone can help. My son goes to uni and he received the full grant and student loan for this year but now uni finance want confirmation by solicitors letter that my husband and I are legally separated. I have never done this and don't want to do it as he still has alot to do with our children. I receive no money from him as he's disabled and is on a low income. I receive tax credits and they have never asked for such confirmation. Can anyone advise me what to do? Thanks

            Hi,
This happened after my sister went to uni. You need your decree of absolute or confirmation of divorce if you are divorced.

They said they would accept a letter from my priest or doctor but I just don't feel comfortable asking for this which will open another can of worms, if you know what I mean. Do you know if you can get a solicitors letter without going through the whole divorce thing?0

Clearly you can't get a letter from a solicitor saying you're divorced if you're not.
However I would have thought you should be able to get an affidavit confirming whatever the situation is.
But it's not clear what the situation is: do you still live under the same roof? do people not know you are separated?Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Many years ago, I was in a similar position (hubby also disabled and unable to pay towards our child), and had to get a solicitor's letter to say that he and I were separated. At the time, I was in receipt of benefits which meant it didn't cost me anything. He and I were on good terms, living in separate properties and it didn't have any detrimental effects on any aspect of his life.0

            thanks for your help everyone.
we've been separated for over 8yrs and he lives with his parents. people do know we're apart. I'll speak to my solicitor tomorrow to see what I can do.
Thanks again for all your help0 -
I was in a similar situation and wanted to apply for funding for my daughter who was enrolling for uni and my local authority just accepted a letter from my husband from his address stating that we were informally separated and have never visited a solicitor etc. I also enclosed the council tax bill in my name only showing my single person discount. That was 5 years ago and we still haven't got around to getting divorced.0
