When someone mentions Java Runtime Environment, I always scratch around to find software which actually requires it!

About the only major systems I can find are Open Office and LibreOffice, and a long-term goal of the latter is to replace JRE with something else.

Are there any other products of note which require JRE?

The only one I've come across is the Think Broadband speed tester - and they have a Flash version which doesn't need JRE...

That is your experience - sometimes you may not even know requires java. And then there are some programs you install which require jre. You only find that out when you have no jre installed.

There is nothing wrong with installing jre - its just there. On linux, its virtually essential and you can try openjdk if you don't like oracle version.

Which is exactly why I say I have found almost nothing that requires JRE - by not having it installed for the past couple of years!

Good for you. Don't install it then and perhaps you will have few problems however installing it is swift and painless. It causes me no problems and just exists so it doesn't seem worth getting excited about.
