broadband usage (BT)

Hi

Does any one know if the usage count is more or the same for surfing the net vs watching summit on youtube?

say an hour on MSE or google VS an hour of watching anything on youtube? will the broadband usage be the same or does watching something on youtube count more towards the usage?

Thanks ( im allowed 40gb per month before i get charged extra)

  • An hour of watching Youtube will be a lot more than an hour of web browsing, even moreso if you up the quality to HD.

    40GB should be plenty enough.

I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us.
  • thanks, but i keep reaching my limit well before the month, i assumed that internet and youtube would be the same in usage terms...oh well.

so if i change the quality from 480p to 240p on youtube then this will help?

£8 more a month you could go unlimited ( within reason)

If you stream a lot, daily, you'll find your limit does reach quite quickly. If you are reaching your limit before the end of the billing month, try looking at more usage per month.

Otherwise dropping the quality on you tube will help a fair bit, but may not solve the issue, and frankly could be frustrating to watch detail wise.

How much do you go over? Do you have to top it up pay per x GB? or are you speed limited only?
  • i have to top it up per gb, i think they charge £5 for every 5gb i go over. ill just have to limit my youtube usage i guess.

are you still within contract with BT?

if not you can look at swopping provider to someone who will give you more usage, and in the first instance you will need to pop your details in here http://www.samknows.com/broadband/broadband_checker and this will give some idea of the options you have available to you, and will allow us to make some suggestions

on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)
