I'm currently with British Gas for both gas and electric and have received my letter about energy increases. The reason why I stop with British Gas is that I like the fact I can give monthly readings and pay for exactly what I use (do all energy suppliers provide this service)? Also, the other main reason is that I can't afford to pay two lots of utilities in the same month I.e. I have to pay a final bill for the supplier I am leaving and then usually have to pay a month upfront for the supplier I am joining. I can see people would say well all suppliers charge upfront so therefore I shouldn't have a leaving / final bill from my current supplier as I have paid in advance but somehow I always seems to have pay twice when switching.

Can someone prove me wrong I.e a) other suppliers where I can provide a monthly reading and pay an accurate bill and b) that I won't have two months of bills in the same month if I switch.

During the winter the maximum I pay is £120 for gas and £60 for electric.

My total readings for gas was 1478 per year and 4567 for electric. I don't know if these are kwh hours, it's just the meter readings I give from the electric / gas meter.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, all energy suppliers will bill this way with credit meters, either on a monthly, quarterly or 6 monthly basis

That should never, ever happen, unless your old supplier dilly-dally too long in sorting out your final bill, and are late sending it to you. You will pay for your energy on a credit basis with your new supplier so if you set up a monthly billing cycle you wont receive your new bill until a month after the switch. Same goes for a quarterly cycle, your new bill will be presented to you approx 3 months after you join
  • Wait until all the suppliers have increased their prices so you can get a balanced comparison.
British gas may have a cheaper tariff available.

Also, you cannot pay for what you use each month online with other suppliers, unless you ring them, a lot let you put a monthly read on their website. However it will not create you a monthly bill, most only come on the quarter but obviously you know what you've used each month.

Utility Warehouse allow you to do this, by variable direct debit.

Your gas readings are almost certainly metric gas units, which equates to around 16,500kWh which is the UK average.

Your electricity consumption is supposedly 38% above the UK average.

I suspect that one of the attractions of a DD for many people is just the opposite reason to you, they prefer to have the annual expenditure deducted in 12 equal payments and not have large bills during the winter.
