I am going to get one of these for my daughter, there is an Asda just down the road as well as a Sainsburys Local so I have got the option to do both.

I dont think she will need to buy and pasta with it though, I think she took about 5 3k bags with her!

  • Just wanted to say to the OP that her thoughtfulness for her sister and parents does her credit.

And as the mother of a student, I'd love to see a rule such as Clowance has mentioned (although I tend to specify a worthwhile purpose when giving mine money and on the whole do trust her to use that particular 'donation' for that particular purpose).

I think these would work better if they restricted the product that could be bought - ie no alcohol!

I thought this too but if you give money instead thers no guarantee it wont be spent this way. I intend to get Asda cards when my GS goes to Uni and if its used for beer welll its his choice afterall.

  • Not sure if this will help, but I bought a gift card for Sainsgogs and Asda (costs a couple of pounds to be posted out to you first time but free to top up online afterwards) from SVM cards. Different shops offer different discount percentages.

I spend £80 a week on shopping in Sains and buy using this gift card I save just over £200 a year.

I also have in my purse a B&Q, H Samuels etc. When I need to go and buy something, I just top up the card first!
